The Beginning of Knowledge<\/h3>\n

\u200b1<\/sup>\u00a0The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:
\n2<\/sup>\u00a0To know wisdom and instruction,
\nto understand words of insight,
\n3<\/sup>\u00a0to receive instruction in wise dealing,
\nin righteousness, justice, and equity;
\n4<\/sup>\u00a0to give prudence to the simple,
\nknowledge and discretion to the youth\u2014
\n5<\/sup>\u00a0Let the wise hear and increase in learning,
\nand the one who understands obtain guidance,
\n6<\/sup>\u00a0to understand a proverb and a saying,
\nthe words of the wise and their riddles.
\n7<\/sup>\u00a0The fear of the LORD<\/strong><\/span>
\nis the beginning<\/strong><\/span>
\nof knowledge;<\/strong><\/span>
\nfools despise wisdom<\/strong><\/span>
\nand instruction.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Enticement of Sinners<\/h3>\n

8<\/sup>\u00a0Hear, my son, your father\u2019s instruction,
\nand forsake not your mother\u2019s teaching,
\n9<\/sup>\u00a0for they are a graceful garland for your head
\nand pendants for your neck.
\n10<\/sup>\u00a0My son, if sinners entice you,
\ndo not consent.
\n11<\/sup>\u00a0If they say, \u201cCome with us, let us lie in wait for blood;
\nlet us ambush the innocent without reason;
\n12<\/sup>\u00a0like Sheol let us swallow them alive,
\nand whole, like those who go down to the pit;
\n13<\/sup>\u00a0we shall find all precious goods,
\nwe shall fill our houses with plunder;
\n14<\/sup>\u00a0throw in your lot among us;
\nwe will all have one purse\u201d\u2014
\n15<\/sup>\u00a0my son, do not walk in the way with them;
\nhold back your foot from their paths,
\n16<\/sup>\u00a0for their feet run to evil,
\nand they make haste to shed blood.
\n17<\/sup>\u00a0For in vain is a net spread
\nin the sight of any bird,
\n18<\/sup>\u00a0but these men lie in wait for their own blood;
\nthey set an ambush for their own lives.
\n19<\/sup>\u00a0Such are the ways of everyone who is greedy for unjust gain;
\nit takes away the life of its possessors.<\/p>\n

The Call of Wisdom<\/h3>\n

20<\/sup>\u00a0Wisdom cries aloud in the street,
\nin the markets she raises her voice;
\n21<\/sup>\u00a0at the head of the noisy streets she cries out;
\nat the entrance of the city gates she speaks:
\n22<\/sup>\u00a0\u201cHow long, O simple ones, will you love being simple?
\nHow long will scoffers delight in their scoffing
\nand fools hate knowledge?
\n23<\/sup>\u00a0If you turn at my reproof,
\nbehold, I will pour out my spirit to you;
\nI will make my words known to you.
\n24<\/sup>\u00a0Because I have called and you refused to listen,
\nhave stretched out my hand and no one has heeded,
\n25<\/sup>\u00a0because you have ignored all my counsel
\nand would have none of my reproof,
\n26<\/sup>\u00a0I also will laugh at your calamity;
\nI will mock when terror strikes you,
\n27<\/sup>\u00a0when terror strikes you like a storm
\nand your calamity comes like a whirlwind,
\nwhen distress and anguish come upon you.
\n28<\/sup>\u00a0Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer;
\nthey will seek me diligently but will not find me.
\n29<\/sup>\u00a0Because they hated knowledge
\nand did not choose the fear of the LORD,
\n30<\/sup>\u00a0would have none of my counsel
\nand despised all my reproof,
\n31<\/sup>\u00a0therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way,
\nand have their fill of their own devices.
\n32<\/sup>\u00a0For the simple are killed by their turning away,
\nand the complacency of fools destroys them;
\n33<\/sup>\u00a0but whoever listens to me will dwell secure
\nand will be at ease, without dread of disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n
